About Iyengar Yoga

The Iyengar Yoga method is known for its precision in alignment, focus on timing and sequencing, and usage of the prop system. Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar (1918-2014) is the extraordinary teacher to gift us with this method, based upon Patanjali’s traditional eight limbs of yoga. Iyengar’s remarkable teachings are well documented in his prolific writings and videos. He has approached the physical practice of yoga asanas and pranayama and applied it to the entire yogic process of self-enlightenment. As a result, students of Iyengar channel deep meditative absorption to the simplest or most challenging of yoga asanas. His exceptional ability to transmit his personal experience and knowledge to his students through his teachings has resulted in a profoundly deep understanding of the body, mind and soul, accessible to those who seek it.

Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar

“Socrates admonished one to know thy self. To know oneself is to know one’s body, mind, and soul. Yoga, I often say, is like music. The rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind, and the harmony of the soul create the symphony of life. The Inward Journey will allow you to explore and to integrate each of these aspects of your being.”

B.K.S. Iyengar, Light on Life

One of the greatest contributions of B.K.S. Iyengar and his method has been in the structured use of props. Props support, teach and challenge the student at all levels. The creativity and variety offered by the prop system bring a fresh perspective to one’s understanding of the body and appreciation of the asana.
